Namely that it somehow emphasises the slight hollowness that lies at the heart of The Hobbit trilogy - a hollowness that wasn’t there with The Lord Of The Rings trilogy and which I attribute to The Hobbit’s story really not being substantial enough to support so many hours of big-budget movie making. That said, The Five Armies’ bravura spectacle does have a downside. I really can’t imagine anyone, not even people who hated the first two Hobbit films, coming away from 'The Battle Of The Five Armies' feeling as if they haven’t had a good time. Ignoring the elf/dwarf romance piffle, obviously. Jackson reminds us in no uncertain terms that nobody does an epic fantasy battle sequence better, delivering a sense of scale, drama and special effects mastery for the trilogy’s climax that’s truly enthralling - especially as Jackson does a reasonably good job of combining the wide spectacle with the smaller poignancy of the main protagonists’ personal stories. And that enjoyment definitely reached a satisfying crescendo with 'The Battle Of The Five Armies' - or at least the film’s final half. So as I said, I’ve still enjoyed 'The Hobbit' trilogy overall. And possibly because of Jackson’s wish to introduce high frame rate technology to the cinematic world, some relatively small-scale sequences have felt strangely awkwardly shot.ĭespite all this, while you don’t feel Jackson has quite the same passion for 'The Hobbit' that he had for 'Lord Of The Rings' his affection for the material is still reasonably infectious the sheer spectacle of the trilogy has never failed to impress (notwithstanding one or two strangely untidy special effect ‘moments’) and the whole thing has been held together by a strong central performance by Martin Freeman. The attempt to shoehorn in a love affair between a dwarf and an elf has been so cringeworthy I’ve had to mentally edit it out. Some plot exposition sequences are almost Lucas-like in their clumsiness and artificiality. WarnerBros.Even us relative fans would have to admit that pacing across the trilogy has been languid at times.
